Blue Note for Carol
therapy session note 7/14/26
She is eighty-three.
Still swinging.
Still finding
the note behind the note.
Thirty years
we’ve played together,
not jazz,
something riskier.
Listening.
Yesterday I put the note pad away.
Leaned toward her.
Eye to eye.
No cleverness.
No psychology.
Just: “Carol you are magnificent.
And. . . .”I love you.”
Silence.
The best part.
Her eyes. . . .
they didn’t fill with tears.
They filled with music.
Like someone had finally played
the chord she’d been hearing
all her life
but never quite believed
belonged to her.
Funny thing
about improvisation.
You practice for decades
so one true sentence
can arrive right on time.
She smiled.
The room changed key.
Even Zoom forgot
it was made of pixels.
Some moments don’t resolve.
They just hang there:
blue,
beautiful,
true!
like Miles
leaving one last note in the air,
Trusting someone’s heart to finish the song.
Thank YOU Carol for sitting with me for 30 years!
Love. Always.
Jayne

Trusting someone's heart to finish the song.
Beautiful improv, Jayne. Love it
I cherish those moments.
